Exactly 30 years since the original Toy Story film debuted, launching Pixar as a leading animation studio and bringing audiences to iconic figures like the cowboy doll (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (the voice talent), who are now famous worldwide.

In 2026, the fifth installment is set to arrive. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 landed this week, providing a glimpse into the storyline but leaving fans wondering how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.

The Latest Addition: A Frog-Shaped Tablet Frightens the Gang

The preview shows the young girl — who inherited Andy's toys when he left for college — getting a latest toy, one that terrifies Woody, Buzz, and the crew. Bonnie gets her initial digital gadget, and she is excited about it.

Theoretically, the amphibian-inspired device will come to life just like Bonnie's other toys. Still, the toys seem to view it as a danger coming to replace them, which it probably is.

The Cowboy's Comeback: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4

One thing the teaser doesn't touch on is why Woody is returned with his companions in Bonnie's room. The finale of Toy Story 4 depicted him set off on a new adventure with the shepherdess (Annie Potts), journeying with a fair and helping giveaway items find good homes.

Certainly, Pixar will explain the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Witnessing him show up in the familiar setting unexpectedly is a little strange, though. It also raises questions whether Bo Peep will have come back with him. And where is Duke Caboom (the star)?

Continuity from the Last Installment

At the very least, some elements are carrying over from the earlier movie. The last thing the cowboy did before departing for his fresh path was hand over his symbol of authority to Jessie (the voice actor), leaving her in charge of the toy domain. The clip displays the badge pinned to her outfit.

It is hoped she is remains the driving force among the group.
